Australian Table Grapes: A Global Success Story, But at What Cost?
Australia's table grape industry is booming, but not all growers are reaping the benefits. Despite heatwaves, the global market is set for a bountiful supply of these grapes, with a particular focus on the Asian market. The recent opening of the Japanese market to Australian grapes has been a game-changer, with exports skyrocketing by 300% last year alone.
But here's the catch: this success story isn't benefiting everyone. The Australian Table Grape Association's Jeff Scott is optimistic, citing increased demand from Asian countries. However, the real challenge lies in the domestic market.
Previously, Australia could only export three varieties to Japan, but now, over 130 varieties are available, thanks to a successful trade barrier removal campaign. This expansion has led to a significant increase in exports, from 3,500 to 10,000 tonnes.
And this is where it gets controversial. While the industry celebrates its international success, the domestic market remains tightly controlled by a few major players. Bill Avery, farm manager at Talia Farms, one of Australia's largest table grape farms, highlights the stark contrast. Despite the farm's efficient practices, ensuring grapes reach shelves within 48 hours, Australian consumers might not see the benefits of a strong growing season reflected in local prices.
